English Flint Tiles Reimagined

Paris Ceramics could not resist breathing new life into quintessential English flint, pairing its primal geology with contemporary fabrication. We hand-select nodules for tone, translucence and the classic conchoidal fracture, then knap, saw and calibrate them into slabs and English flint tiles, with select ranges offered as interlocking modules for seamless fields.

Faces may be left hand-knapped for a lively, faceted read or precision dressed, honed or polished for quieter uniformity. Edges and corner returns are produced in-house to maintain continuous lines. Locally sourced from southern chalk belts and made alongside Norfolk master flint-knappers, our flint retains its dark, glassy lustre while meeting modern tolerances and repeatability.

Feature Walls, Fireplaces And Exterior Details

Ideal for feature walls, fireplaces and exterior detailing, English flint is a sustainable, tactile surface that feels both ancient and current. Our R&D continues: we’re developing new treatments and pairings, including flint combined with pyrites, to extend the palette and possibilities.

Used around a fireplace, across a feature wall, within exterior detailing or as part of a more experimental architectural surface, English flint tiles bring texture, shadow and a distinctive sense of craft.

An English Architectural Language

As a material, flint has long belonged to the architectural language of England, particularly in churches, boundary walls, vernacular buildings and historic façades. Its dark, glass-like surface gives it a very different character from limestone, sandstone or marble. It can feel elemental, graphic and almost mineral-black, yet still deeply connected to place.

For a deeper look at this material’s journey from prehistoric tool to architectural surface, read our blog on English flint.

Irregularity And Control

The beauty lies in the balance between irregularity and control. Hand-knapped faces catch the light with sharper movement, while honed or polished finishes create a calmer and more refined surface.

Paris Ceramics’ approach allows this ancient material to be used with greater precision, without losing the geological force and handmade character that make flint so compelling.

English flint tiles sit naturally alongside other historic and architectural surfaces, including Antique Reclaimed Stone, Rare Limestones And Stone Floors and Metal Tiles.

Used with stone, plaster, timber, marble, limewash or architectural metalwork, flint brings a dark, tactile counterpoint to softer or more reflective materials. It is a surface with weight, craft and quiet drama.
