Petrified Wood Mosaic Panel – Tribe Collection

The Petrified Wood Mosaic Panel combines Pyrite and Petrified Wood in a closely repeated composition of dark and pale mineral forms. The metallic lustre of the Pyrite contrasts with the fossil grain, colour and ancient markings retained within the Petrified Wood. Steve Charles uses this material contrast to create a surface that feels ordered, tactile and quietly ceremonial.

Petrified Wood Mosaic Panel with Repeated Rhythm

The design is formed from narrow vertical rows of small, shaped elements. Dark Pyrite pieces alternate with pale Petrified Wood, creating an undulating pattern that recalls a woven textile, beaded surface or chain of repeated mineral forms. The compact scale allows the surface to read as a continuous field rather than a collection of separate motifs.

Natural variation prevents the pattern from becoming mechanical. Some fossilised pieces are almost white, while others move through cream, smoke, ochre, grey and warm amber. The dark Pyrite introduces density and metallic reflection, giving the paler elements greater definition.

Pyrite, Fossil Grain and Talismanic Pattern

The repeated forms have a crafted, almost talismanic quality. Their narrow waists and broader centres create a subtle pulse across the panel, while the vertical arrangement gives the composition architectural order. Petrified Wood Mosaic Panel changes as the viewer moves, with metallic areas catching light and fossil markings emerging at closer range.

Within this collection, the surface reflects Steve Charles’ interest in repetition, unusual material combinations and designs that reveal their complexity gradually. The Steve Charles Collection provides further context for his craft-led approach. Petrified Wood Chevron Panel explores the same materials through larger chevron geometry, while Harlequin Pyrite Mosaic develops Pyrite through interlocking diamonds.

The finished decorative mineral panel brings together fossil history, metallic depth and precise small-scale assembly. Its disciplined pattern retains warmth because every piece of Petrified Wood carries a different record of colour, grain and geological time.
