Petrified Wood Chevron Panel – Tribe Collection

The Petrified Wood Chevron Panel is among Steve Charles’ loved designs, recreated through Pyrite and Petrified Wood. It is also one of the most intricate patterns in the collection. The metallic lustre of Pyrite beside fossilised wood emphasises the natural grain as light moves across the surface. The design reflects an appreciation for metallic shades within contemporary interiors.

Petrified Wood Chevron Panel with Pyrite

The surface is organised as a repeated chevron built from narrow vertical strips. Dark Pyrite sections form an architectural framework, while the Petrified Wood introduces cream, ivory, ochre, grey and warm brown tones. Each fossilised section retains its own linear markings, so the pale elements resemble fragments of timber grain held permanently within stone.

The contrast between the materials gives the pattern its rhythm. Pyrite contributes depth and a subdued metallic response, while the Petrified Wood softens the composition with organic variation. Scalloped edges along the lighter pieces add craftsmanship and prevent the geometry from feeling mechanically produced.

Chevron Geometry with Natural Mineral Variation

Although the repeat is disciplined, no two sections carry exactly the same colour or marking. Some pieces appear almost white, while others move through honey, smoke and pale green-grey. These changes allow Petrified Wood Chevron Panel to shift between bold pattern and detailed material study.

Within this collection, the design reflects Steve Charles’ interest in bold geometry, controlled repetition and surfaces that reveal more over time. The wider  Steve Charles Collection provides further context for this craft-led approach. Harlequin Pyrite Mosaic offers another exploration of Pyrite and changing light, while Egyptian Weave combines the mineral with Quartz in a sculptural composition.

The finished Pyrite and Petrified Wood panel brings together fossil history, metallic lustre and precise hand assembly. Its chevron structure has graphic presence, yet the ancient grain held within the wood gives the surface warmth, individuality and a sense of time.
