Pyrite Quartz Weave Panel

This Pyrite Quartz Weave Panel is inspired by the Step Pyramid of King Djoser, built at Saqqara in the 27th century BC. Steve Charles has created a contemporary wall panel using shaped and polished Pyrite and Quartz in a pattern adapted from the geometry of Egypt’s first pyramid. It refers to ancient stone ornament while retaining the monument’s enduring mystery.

Pyrite Quartz Weave Panel and Djoser’s Geometry

The composition is built from alternating courses of dark metallic and luminous white stone. Broad Pyrite blocks form the dominant bands, while narrower Quartz sections pass between them like threads within a woven textile. Each rectangular component has a softly faceted face, giving the surface sculptural depth and allowing highlights to travel across the panel.

The disciplined arrangement recalls stepped architecture without reproducing the pyramid literally. Repetition, proportion and shadow transform monumental geometry into an intimate decorative surface.

Pyrite, Quartz and Sculptural Rhythm

The contrast between near-black mineral tones and pale Quartz gives the stone weave clarity, while natural markings prevent the pattern from becoming uniform. Pyrite introduces a metallic lustre that shifts through charcoal, pewter and silver-toned reflections.

Quartz provides a quieter counterpoint, with translucent ivory-white tones that soften the darker courses. Together, the polished minerals produce a black and white stone mosaic with unusual depth, balancing archaeological inspiration with contemporary precision.

Within this collection, Pyrite Quartz Weave Panel reflects Steve Charles’ interest in adapting historic sources through material and craftsmanship. For more about the designer’s approach, explore the Steve Charles Collection.

Pyrite Quartz Weave Panel reads from a distance as an ordered textile-like field, yet retains the individuality of every shaped and polished mineral element.
