Antique Parrefeuille terracotta tiles were used throughout the southern part of France, and are unusual by their rectangular rather than square shape.
These tiles are hand selected by Paris Ceramics from the Languedoc region of France. Antique Parrefeuille tiles were handmade and fired in wood-burning kilns, a practice that ceased in the 19th century.
Made from local earth, roughly sieved, to give them their varied texture and beautiful pink and ochre tones, these tiles are up to 150 years in age. Antique Parrefeuille tiles are approximately 20 x 35cm (8” x 14”) x 2.3 to 3cm (1” to 1¼”) in thickness, but can vary in size.
As part of the Antique Reclaimed Terracotta Floor Tiles collection, Antique Parrefeuille has a particularly architectural quality. Its longer rectangular proportion gives the floor direction and rhythm, creating a calmer, more linear effect than smaller square tomettes or hexagonal formats.
These Antique Parrefeuille terracotta tiles are especially suited to kitchens, entrance halls, garden rooms, boot rooms and country house interiors where warmth, age and texture are central to the scheme. The surface carries the memory of hand moulding, kiln firing and long use, with softened edges, tonal variation and the quiet irregularity that cannot be replicated convincingly by machine-made tile.
