Rock Crystal Jali Panels

Rock Crystal Jali Panels take their point of departure from an old belief recorded by the Roman naturalist Pliny the Elder, who regarded quartz as water ice permanently frozen over time. The word crystal derives from the Greek krystallos, meaning ice. Steve Charles developed the idea of sandwiching a brass stencil within rock crystal during a visit to the workshop in India, drawing on a childhood fascination with objects appearing trapped in ice.

That experiment led to thin-cut brass sheets held between crystal pieces and assembled as architectural panels.

Rock Crystal Jali Panels and the Idea of Frozen Light

Rock Crystal Jali Panels reinterpret the traditional jali through transparency rather than open carving. Historical Indian jalis were pierced screens whose geometric or botanical patterns filtered sunlight, moderated privacy and animated interiors with moving shadows. Here, the pattern appears enclosed within pale rock crystal, as though curling foliate forms have been caught beneath a translucent surface.

The composition has a cool silver-white palette with cloudy mineral veining, reflective striations and overlapping organic shapes. Vertical divisions remain visible, emphasising an assembled architectural surface rather than a printed decorative effect. Light moves through and across the crystal differently from one section to the next, revealing new layers as the viewing angle changes.

Brass Stencilwork Encased in Rock Crystal

The contrast between precisely cut brass and naturally varied crystal gives the design its character. Controlled geometry is softened by inclusions, haze and shifting translucency, allowing the material to remain active rather than perfectly uniform. Rock Crystal Jali Panels balance Indian craft references with Steve Charles’ interest in experimentation, proportion and surfaces that reward attention.

The Steve Charles Collection provides further context for the designer’s approach, while Crystal and Firestone Panel and Egyptian Weave offer related studies in reflective stone, metal and sculptural repetition.
