This Paisley Stone Inlay Panel is adapted from an ancient Persian floor design built around a teardrop-shaped motif with a curved upper end. Details in Lapis Lazuli, Mother of Pearl and Pyrite refine the composition. Paisley patterns are commonly associated with textiles but are demanding to translate into precisely cut stone. Simple in outline yet rich in artistic finesse, this panel brings historic decorative language into a surface.
The familiar paisley form developed from the Persian boteh, a stylised motif associated with buds, cones, palm fronds and the tree of life. Steve Charles enlarges its flowing outline and gives it clarity. Three principal motifs appear across a pale, softly veined stone ground, accompanied by smaller quatrefoils that establish balance and measured repetition.
Deep blue Lapis Lazuli forms the central droplets and accents. Dark outlines sharpen each curved profile, while pale green and iridescent Mother of Pearl follow the inner contours and respond to changing light. Pyrite adds discreet metallic highlights around the smaller ornaments. The contrast of opaque stone, reflective mineral and luminous shell gives the semi-precious stone inlay depth without overwhelming its restrained palette.
The tapered curves of the boteh are difficult to execute in hard materials. Each element of Paisley Stone Inlay Panel must be shaped and closely fitted so the lines remain fluid rather than angular. Transitions between black, green, pearl and blue demonstrate the precision associated with pietra dura and decorative stone marquetry.
Within this collection, the design reflects Steve Charles’ interest in reinterpreting historic ornament through rare materials. For related mineral surfaces, see Semi-Precious Stone, while Mosaics presents further traditions of hand-cut architectural pattern.
Paisley Stone Inlay Panel is graphic yet quietly luxurious, with pale areas allowing its intricate inlays to breathe and reward close inspection.
