Celadon Cosmati Mosaic Panel – Cosmati Collection

The Celadon Cosmati Mosaic Panel is inspired by medieval Cosmatesque pavements and the broader Byzantine tradition of geometric stone inlay. Steve Charles has designed a contemporary version using semi-precious stones, bringing one of the world’s richest traditions of architectural ornament into a modern context.

Celadon Cosmati Mosaic Panel and Geometric Inlay

The design is composed as a pale, luminous field rather than a strongly contrasting medieval pavement. Celadon-green and ivory stone forms create a soft diagonal structure, interrupted by small square inlays with pearl-toned iridescence. These reflective details gather light across the surface, allowing the pattern to emerge gradually.

Cosmati work is associated with opus sectile, or cut work, in which coloured stones are shaped and assembled into disciplined geometric arrangements. In this contemporary interpretation, the historic language of repeated squares, interlocking bands and mineral colour becomes a restrained lattice.

Material, Light and Architectural Rhythm

Natural tonal movement within the semi-precious stone ensures that the composition retains depth despite its controlled repetition. The subtle palette gives Celadon Cosmati Mosaic Panel an architectural calm suited to interiors where texture and proportion matter as much as colour.

At a distance, the pattern reads as a broad pale stone plane. At closer range, the iridescent elements and shifting green tones reveal the precision of the inlay and the hand of the maker.

Within this collection, the piece reflects Steve Charles’ balance of bold geometry and disciplined repetition. For related historic stonework, see Cosmati Tiles, while Semi-Precious Stone offers further examples of mineral colour and reflective inlay.

Celadon Cosmati Mosaic Panel translates medieval decorative intelligence into a quieter contemporary language, preserving the relationship between material, geometry and changing light.
