Pebble mosaics are the earliest form of mosaic art, with origins tracing back to 8th century BCE Mesopotamia and Greece. Natural river pebbles were hand-laid into decorative floors and courtyards, chosen for their durability and beauty. Some of the finest surviving examples can be found in Olynthus (5th century BCE) and Pella in Macedonia (4th century BCE), where intricate black-and-white pebble mosaics depicted mythological scenes and bold geometric patterns. Long before cut tesserae became standard, pebble mosaics defined the artistry of classical pavements, palaces, and bathhouses.
Today, Paris Ceramics continues this ancient tradition. Using naturally rounded pebbles, our mosaics are hand-laid to create organic patterns and textures that celebrate the raw beauty of nature. Each mosaic is unique, with subtle variations in colour and form that evoke the character of antique courtyards while suiting both interior and exterior applications. Durable, tactile, and timeless, pebble mosaics bring history into the present — a surface as relevant now as it was thousands of years ago.
