ANTIQUE JERUSALEM STONE
These ancient stone floors originated
from quarries in the Southern Hebron
Mountains near Jerusalem. The stone was used
for floors in public buildings, courtyards and
private houses for many hundreds of years,
beginning from Roman times. The quarries
themselves have long since been closed and
the stone is no longer produced.
The striking smoothness and patina of
this stone result from centuries of wear:
a combination of the sheer number of
people who have walked across the floor
from day to day over the years along with
regular scrubbing with soap and water.
This has given the stone a gentle colour
and texture, which never could be achieved
by machine or by hand. |
